Five reasons to be cheerful and visit Penrith.

Five reasons to be cheerful and visit Penrith.

Penrith is an historic market town situated on the edge of the Lake District. Small, pretty and cute: many of our independent shops are less than 5 minutes walk of each other.

Reason number 1:

We recommend that you start in the centre of our town and use the Monument Clock Tower as your anchor. From here, you can see The George Hotel, Graham's Delicatessen and Arnison's Drapery Shop. Arnison's sells quality clothing, lingerie and our favourite perfume range from Floris. No need to travel to Jermyn Street, London, you will find an extensive range of Floris perfumes and aftershaves on the ground floor.

If, like us, you are obsessed with cheese scones and curry, Graham's Delicatessen has homemade scones (plus butter) and a range of Mr Vikki's curry sauces and chutneys (all made in Penrith.) You will also be tempted by a life changing cheese counter, traybakes, wines, coffee beans and lots of other treats we all need occasionally.   Look out for delicious marmalades, a citrus infused hangover from the International Marmalade Festival which is held locally at Dalemain Country House. Paddington has all the answers so go and ask him. You'll find him in Little Dockray along with more of our independent shops The Lion Gallery, Unicorn and Hedgehog Book Shop.

Reason number 2:

Time to stroll down Angel Lane to say hello to us in Moon on the Hill. We talk too much, we sing too much, we dance too much - we are NEVER boring! We take pride in stocking beautiful jewellery, cards, prints, candles and we have been NKUKU stockists since 2020.  Our lovely community of returning customers say they like us because we stock unique products for the home which are beautiful and sustainable. We have bespoke items for your home, camper van, tent and original gifts for those distant relatives who usually receive socks.

Next door to Moon on the Hill is our lovely neighbour, Peter, who owns Eclectic - a treasure trove of vintage pieces including amazing musical instruments and opposite we are lucky to have Eden Eyecare, independent opticians and style gurus.

Reason number 3:

Round the corner you will find Number Three, Cornmarket. Three is a magic number and you'll see why when you meet local winemaker, Sam (Black Hand Wine), Withnail Books and internationally reknown knitwear designer, Katie Mawson. Take a peek, there's so much to see.

Reason number 4:

Fancy a coffee? Looking for good vibes and moreish bean to cup coffee, visit Neaum (you can see it from the clock.)  They sell cakes, too. They're TOO delicious but don't take our word for it, find out for yourself. You will leave feeling refreshed, smiling and full to the brim of positive vibes.

Reason number 5:

Raining? Been to say 'hi' to all the independent shop owners?  Penrith has the most gorgeous cinema run by a lovely bunch of people who are passionate about film and culture. Open everyday, two screens, sumptious red velvet seating and special screenings of theatre and ballet productions. Recent favourite films of ours were "Complete Unknown" (You know that one starring Tim Chall) and The Salt Path. You will find the Tourist Information Centre and Local History museum next door. A hidden gem in a beautiful building.

The last few years have been difficult for small towns and Penrith is no exception. We strive to foster a sense of community with those near and far. We have been priviledged to hear your stories, you brighten our day and we appreciate meeting you all and introducing you to talented designers (they're all lovely, too!) Thank you very much for all of your loyalty and support. We're gonna keep gaan!!!
